As a medical doctor, I was taught to heal with medicine and use evidence based proof that medical or surgical therapy works. Today I have a different approach. I use a combination of traditional Eastern and Western options for healing.
As an obstetrician, the standard treatment for a pregnant woman is to ‘stand by’ and watch her give birth. Birth is a natural process not a medical procedure needing treatment. I am often seen roaming the halls with my cup of coffee and chatting on my phone while my patient is embracing her labor and progressing without intervention from the nursing staff or myself. This is the ultimate in natural healing but not what we call alternative healing. Pregnancy is a natural state of being and can heal or deliver itself without medical intervention (most of the time). I want to talk about all the other issues in women’s healthcare that I deal with daily. Issues like depression, anxiety, sexual libido, PMS, PMDD, abnormal bleeding, and menopause.
Alternative medicine is defined as ‘other practices of healing minimizing surgery or medication’. Often herbal supplements are used, physical healing like chiropractic care, massage therapy, physical therapy, Rieke healing, acupuncture and others.
I have seen alternate healing, I have offered alternative healing and I have been healed by alternative healers! Personally, I have seen psychologists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, body talk healers, Rieke healers and done hypno-therapy. We all go through life with emotional, physical, spiritual and psychological events which shape our being. Childhood trauma and anger can lead to both emotional disability as an adult as well as physical pain, especially upper back pain. Bad relationships can often lead to bad parenting skills affecting ourselves and our children. Even traumatic experiences during a pregnancy can affect the child’s emotional wellbeing as an adult.
I suffered from plantar fasciitis (severe pain in the heel and bottom of the foot with unclear etiology) in both of my feet for many years. I started with over the counter shoe inserts, then tried expensive orthotics. That was followed by injections into my heels several times which brought only short term relief. I decided to try alternative treatment options. I did three months of physical therapy including chiropractic care. My right foot was healed but my left foot was unimproved. I then did acupuncture for my left foot. Four sessions later I was pain free. This was over 1 year ago and I am still pain free.
Being on time has always been a significant part of my personality. I felt it showed respect to the person I am meeting and it was polite. The problem is that the worry of being late has become a personality flaw causing a significant burden to me and my family. On family trips, I always demand that my family be ready to go the night before and that we arrive at the airport 3 hours prior to departure. This gave me a sense of relief that I am on time (even if on time is unnecessarily early). This flaw in my personality has caused both strife between my wife and me and caused my children to follow suit in needing to be extra early to feel they are on time. If I was running late to meet friends for dinner, I would begin to perspire. I ask my wife to call them and apologize to them often to find they are running 15 minutes late as well. I then have her call the restaurant so that they would not cancel our reservation. Though this sounds silly, I did it out of fear and anxiety about being late. Finally, I could not take it anymore. I decided to see my wife’s Hypno-therapist to try and remedy my flaw. After just one session which included behavioral feedback, I was cured! This happened over 18 months ago and since then I have not been stressed about being on time. No sweating, yelling, anxiety or fear. I feel incredible!
These are just a few examples of hundreds of patients, family and friends who have benefited from alternative healing. Postpartum depression (therapy), PMS/PMDD (herbal supplements), poor performance (flower extracts), stress and anxiety (massage, Rieke and Hypo-therapy), aches and pain (herbal/P.T./chiropractor) and many more can all be helped with both Eastern and Western healing. Please do not be ‘stiff necked’ and refuse alternative treatments for the problems you are experiencing, especially when traditional treatments are ineffective. You do not have to live with what ails you. You have the power to heal yourself! You are amazing and deserve to live a life free of physical and emotional pain, including anxiety and fear.
